Red Lake Schools, Red Lake Tribal Programs, others, closed today due to weather conditions

RED LAKE - The Red Lake School District will not have school on Friday, April 12, 2019, due to dangerous weather conditions that started late Thursday afternoon.

Other schools in Southern Minnesota had closed on Thursday because of blizzard conditions and major road closures.

For Northern Minnesota, a major winter storm moving through the area will bring 4 to 8 inches of additional snow tonight into tomorrow. Heavy snow could and wind gusts to 40 mph bring low visibilities at times.

There will be an additional threat from this storm, which is the possibility of sliding off roads into flooded ditches. Hypothermia can set in quickly even this time of the year if a person gets wet.

Areas of overland snowmelt and river flooding continue along much of the Red River and its tributaries. Refer to the latest flood warnings and statements for detailed information on specific locations.

On Thursday night Red Lake School District called off school for Friday, as did Red Lake Tribal Programs announcing no work. The Red Lake Police Department also issued a No Travel advisory for Thursday night stating "roads are snow/ice covered n visibility is very poor..."

The message went on to state, If you absolutely have to drive, drive very slowly with your hazards lights on and if you stop on the road make sure your completely off on the shoulder. We are again advising no travel until further notice."

More snow is expected on Friday afternoon.
