Red Lake School Board Meeting held on Wednesday, February 20, 2019

RED LAKE - The Red Lake School Board held its Regular School Board Meeting on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at the Administration Building beginning at 2 PM. All board members except Marcus Tyler were present for the meeting.

Public comments were made by Tina Gibbs, parent and Mike Hogan from St. Mary's Mission School, followed by a presentation from Dan Rogers on their planned Science Club Summer Trip for one or two chaperones and five students. The Board approved this trip later on in the meeting.

Other reports were made from the Business Manager's Office, Ojibwe Education Steward, Special Services Department, Human Resources, Building and Grounds, Security Coordiunator, Red Lake K-5 Principal Report, Ponemah K-8 School Report, Secondary Complex and Transortation Department.

In the Consent Agenda, the minutes of the January 13, 2019 board meeting was approved; accepted a resignation from paraprofessionals Elaine (Rosa) Oakgrove and Shaleesa Johns; approved maternity leave requests from Amanda Norman and Connor Sullivan; approved an unpaid leave request from Lindsey Johns, Security Guard; approved additions to the licensed and non-licensed substitute list; approved an addition to the Elder Program list; hired Marcella (Molly) Sigana as a Cook at the Secondary Complex; hired Denise Jones as a cook at Red Lake Elementary School; accepted a resignation from paraprofessional Ashley White; and hired baseball, softball and golf coaches. They are: Kyle Fairbanks, Head Baseball Coach; Nolan Desjarlait, Assistant Coach, and Gerald Kingbird and Christopher Walker as Junior High Coaches; Randy Holthusen, Head Softball Coach, Matt Hartvikson, Assistant Coach, and Tara White and Lynelle Roy as JH Coaches. Brad Castle was hired as the head boys coach, Ron Laituri, head girls coach and Robert Pemberton, JH coach.

Ten District Policies were amended for Staff Development for Standards, Curriculum Development, Assessment of Student Achievement, District Testing Policy and Procedure, Testing Accommodations, Modifications and Exemptions for IEPs, Graduation Requirements, Instructional Curriculum, School District Curriculum and Instruction Goals, Wellness and Tobacco-Free Environment.

The Board approved bills and wire payments in the amount of $1,843,269,70, adopted the 2019-2020 School Calendar, approved the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) Vote, approved the Achievement and Integration Grant application,, out of state travel for the Science Club Summer Trip and the lease agreement with Oshkiimaajitahdah.

The School Board approved termination and non-renewal of several teaching contracts. They were, probationary teachers; Anna Sherwood, Brandon Bahr, Christopher Walkera, Gerald Kingbird, Justin Vallie, Karissa Evans, Kimberly Pepin, Kyle Fairbanks, Laura Matheney and Sharna Johnson.

The Board also approved tenure and renewal of the teaching contracts of Brittany Harris, Darren Olson, Greta Kovar, Jane Patch, Maria Murphy, Renae Spangler, Robert Jones, Amanda Norman, Dr. Giniwgiizhoig and Stephanie Amberg.

For the Winter weather closings, the Board voted to add March 21st and April 21st, originally non-student and teacher days, as regular school days to be made up. No school days will be added to the end of the school calendar.

Finally, and it took four separate votes (3-3 for Red Lake Builders, 3-3 for Donlar Construction, 2-4 for Bradbury Stamm Construction, Red Lake Builders 4-2) to obtain a majority, Red Lake Builders was selected for Construction Management Services for the 2019, $14 million dollar capital loan project. The Board held a Special Board Meeting on Friday, February 15, 2019 to hear all three proposals from the firms.
