Mesa girl, 11, captures Native American hoop title

February 19, 2019

Kailayne Jensen, 11, of Mesa, holds the medal she won at the Heard Museum's annual World Championship Hoop Dance Contest. Hoop dancing is a tradition for her family, which includes other past and current competition winners.

Mesa resident Kailayne Jensen, 11, captured the World Youth Champion title earlier this month at the 29th annual World Championship Hoop Dance Contest at the Heard Museum.

Kailayne was one of 27 dancers to compete in the Youth division for ages 6-12, the highest number ever posted. Because of the large number of competitors, for the first time two contestants performed in the ring simultaneously. This is her second Youth World Champion title.
