Red Lake Elders Ojibwemowin Advisory Committee

The monthly scheduled Elders Ojibwemowin Advisory Committee met Monday, February 11, 2019. Due to a funeral, the meeting was short. Elizabeth "Pug" Kingbird, began a short discussion by giving a six- or seven-minute talk entirely in Ojibwemowin.

"She spoke about the importance of what we are doing and how significant it is," said Taylor, "I was really moved and couldn't help but give her a big hug after she finished."

Get Involved with Ojibwemowin and Cultural Revitalization in Your Community

The Ojibwe Language Revitalization Advisory Committee consists of First Speakers, mostly elders but also some younger at various levels of fluency. The group is staffed by Red Lake's Economic Development Department and Immersion Schools.

The effort is part of and advises the Waasabiik Ojibwemotaadiwin Immersion School but is also open to discussing cultural matters and presentations.

The school is located within the halls of the new Red Lake Nation College. The group has developed immersion school project partners, including a collaboration of skilled and fluent speaking community members.

The team meets monthly on the second Monday in the Culture Room at Red Lake High School from 3:30 to 6 pm.
