BCA hands fatal Bemidji officer-involved shooting case to county attorney

BEMIDJI, MN–An investigation into November's fatal officer-involved shooting in Bemidji has been handed over to the Beltrami County Attorney.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Wednesday its portion of the investigation is complete, and it's now up to the Beltrami County Attorney to decide whether charges will be filed against two officers who fired their weapons during a struggle during a traffic stop in November 2018.

Authorities say 34-year-old Vernon Andrew John May, of Red Lake, died of multiple gunshot wounds.

The officers say May had a handgun with him during the incident.

The BCA reports a gun was recovered from the scene.
