LA teachers go on strike in 2nd-largest US school district

LOS ANGELES — Tens of thousands of Los Angeles teachers went on strike Monday after contentious contract negotiations failed in the nation’s second-largest school district, but schools were still open with the help of substitutes and district officials vowed “there will be learning.”

“Students, we are striking for you,” teachers union President Alex Caputo-Pearl told a cheering crowd of educators marching in pouring rain.
