In response to an opiate crisis declaration of state of emergency by the Red Lake Tribal Council, two tribal programs have joined forces to promote recovery and wellness." A return to Tradition" is the theme adopted by the chemical health and Oshkiimaajitahdah programs for a wellness gathering co-sponsored by both programs.
The Gathering slated for January 9, 10, 11 at the Red Lake Nation college will highlight what is working to overcome addictions and preventable diseases in Indian communities and surrounding areas. Using the Native American medicine wheel and holistic healing as a guide, the program includes local and nationally acclaimed speakers, entertainers, and healthy lifestyle success stories.
The two and a half day event will begin by highlighting recovery networks in Minnesota communities and on social media. It will conclude on Friday morning with UCLA addiction psychologist, researcher, and PHD Daniel Dickerson who will present on drum-assisted therapy in recovery programs.
Everyone is welcome. There is no registration fee and all events are free of charge.
AGENDA
Community Wellness Gathering - “A Return to Tradition”
Where: Red Lake Nation College
When: January 9, 10, 11, 2019
The objective of this gathering is to provide a catalyst for change in the community for people seeking solutions and opportunities that improve the quality of life for themselves and others. Using the Medicine Wheel as a guide, this gathering will focus on “what is working” when fostering success in people overcoming poverty, addictions, health issues, traumas, and grief. The question of this gathering is how can we help to guide our people to the networks and resources that will improve their quality of life? This gathering will focus on the successes of our people, identify what resources are available, strengthen existing networks, and build new ones. In the words of the late elder and substance abuse treatment pioneer Cecil White Hat, “Everything we need to heal is in the culture.”
