WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM WEDNESDAY TO NOON CST FRIDAY...

* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 or more inches expected. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph by Thursday afternoon and overnight into Friday morning.

* WHERE...Portions of central, north central, northwest and west central Minnesota. The heaviest snow is expected across southeast North Dakota into northern Minnesota.

* WHEN...From Wednesday evening through Friday morning. Winds will increase Thursday afternoon and night.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. The cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 3 minutes.

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Here's an updated look at snowfall potential across the region from Wednesday afternoon through Friday morning. The greatest risk for heavy snow lies from northeast South Dakota and southeast North Dakota into western and north central Minnesota. Snowfall totals up to one foot or greater will be possible as two rounds of snow move through the region. Additionally, strong northerly winds picking up Thursday evening may cause significant blowing snow through much of the Red River Valley through Friday morning.
