Funeral Services for Fred Fast Horse age 87 of Eagle Butte will be 9:30 AM Friday, December 21, 2018 at the Vet Center in Eagle Butte. Meet at the Cannon Ball Junction at 5:00 PM night wake will be 7:00 PM Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at the Red Gym in Cannon Ball. Meet at four-mile junction at 4:00 PM Second all night wake will be 7:00 PM Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the Vet Center in Eagle Butte. Interment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery at 2:00 PM Friday, December 21, 2018 under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Fred passed away Thursday, December 13, 2018 at IHS Hospital in Eagle Butte, SD.

Frederick Lee Fasthorse "Iyokipiya Kaga" (Makes Happiness) was born on November 7, 1931, in Cannonball, ND. His parents were Sam Fasthorse and Rose Brown.

Fred attended a couple of religious schools during grade school and graduated from Ft. Yates High School. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and served four years during the Korean War. He was a Boatswin Mate 3rd Class and his ship was the USS Calvert. Fred was very proud of his military time in the Navy his military ribbons National Defense, Korean Service, China Service, United Nation Service.

After his military time, Fred worked for North American Aviation building air planes. He did receive a commendation for inventing a new way to save time and expense in the process of plane manufacturing.

During this period of his life, Fred met and married his wife, Carrie Fasthorse of Promise, SD. They were together for approximately forty years.

He worked in Minneapolis for Honeywell Corp. Fred also lived in Chicago where he attended trade school for refrigeration and heating.

Fred and Carrie had three wonderful children in their marriage; Paul, Renee and Michelle. After which they were blessed with seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Fred's Lakota name is Iyokipiya Kaga- Makes Happiness- which was very appropriate for him as he was always trying to laugh, tease and make everyone happy.

When his homeland area of Cannon Ball made a stand for our water against DAPL, a call out to all Veterans was declared. Fred at 85 years old, as a Korean War Vet, answered this call showing his warrior spirit. He traveled up to the Ocheti Sakowin Camp north of Cannon Ball along with over three thousand other Veterans from all over the nation.

He was a kind and good person, a traditional proper gentleman, also known as Ikce Wicasa "Common Man". He loved his family and liked to spend time teasing, talking to his grandchildren. He was very proud of all of his family. He was loved very much and will be missed by his family, and his thiospaye.

Fred is survived by his Wife, Carrie Jewett Fasthorse, Son, Paul M. Fasthorse Sr., Daughter, Renee (Manny) Iron Hawk, his Brother, Adrian Crow Feather, Sisters, Delphine (Irvin) Plenty Chief, Melda Crow Feather, many grandchildren: Rokie, Felicia, Shotay, Dominique, Michon, Paul Jr., and Claudia and several great- grandchildren, numerous cousins, nephews and nieces – too many to list.

He was preceded in death by his, Daughter – Michelle DeMarrias, Father, Samuel Fasthorse, Mother, Rose Brown, Uncle, Henry and Aunt, Lillian Swift Horse, Brother, Fenton Fasthorse Sr., Wayne Fasthorse, Winfield and Gerald Crow Feather, Sisters, Paulene Fasthorse-Garcia, Audrey Fasthorse-BlackHoop, younger brother, Sylvester Fasthorse, many other relatives some older and some younger than him that passed on ahead of him.
