BP: 4 from Bemidji sentenced for Red Lake home invasion

DULUTH-Four Bemidji residents have been sentenced in federal court for their roles in a home invasion at the Red Lake Reservation last year.

United States Attorney Erica H. MacDonald said Tuesday that Derek Jon Paddy, 22, Kevin Robertson, 32, Cherai Michelle Clark, 26, and Shanise Frances Ostlund, 29, of Bemidji, played roles in the Nov. 24, 2017, crime.

Robertson was sentenced to just over four years in prison, while Paddy received just over two years in prison, while Clark was sentenced to 21 months in prison. Ostlund was sentenced to three years probation. The four were sentenced Monday by Judge Susan Nelson in U.S. District Court in Duluth.

Ostlund and Robertson were found guilty of second-degree burglary on Sept. 12 following a jury trial in Duluth. Paddy plead guilty to second-degree burglary on Aug. 31 and Clark pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary on Sept. 10.

"Defendants Paddy and Robertson are repeat violent offenders, who chose to continue to commit crime," MacDonald said in a release. "My office and our law enforcement partners are committed to ensuring all communities have the opportunity to be safe."

According to court documents, in the early morning hours of Nov. 24, 2017, following a brawl at a local Walmart store, Ostlund, Robertson, Paddy and Clark drove together to the victim's residence with intentions to confront the victim and steal their property. When the defendants arrived, Paddy and Clark kicked in the front door and entered the residence along with Ostlund and Robertson. The defendants expected to find the victim inside the residence; however, the victim escaped by jumping out of a window, the release said. The defendants stole various items from the residence before leaving the property.

This case was investigated by the FBI Headwaters Safe Trails Task Force, the Red Lake Police Department and the Bemidji Police Department.
