PEMBINA, N.D. (Valley News Live)- North Dakotan's living near the border with Canada say they feel unsafe.
They're concerned with a problem commonly associated with the U.S. Border with Mexico.
The United States Border Patrol says they've seen a slight increase in people arrested for illegally entering from Canada.
An officer with the Pembina port of entry says they've seen an increase in illegal drugs coming in as well.
"I don't think I'll feel safe if people won't be checked and we don't know who's actually coming into the country," says Monica Stanley, Pembina resident for 16 years.
That's why officers with the U.S Customs and Border Protection at the Pembina port of entry do a thorough check of people coming into the country.
"We have radiation portal monitors. We have imaging systems where we can scan commercial trucks. We have x-ray vans. But most importantly we have our CBP officers and our CBP Agriculture Specialists," says Chris Misson, Assistant Area Port Director.
But those don't stop people from getting into the country.
Officers use that gear and K9's to also watch out for contraband.
"The majority of the narcotics that we find at Pembina is marijuana. Not very much for methamphetamine, ecstasy, cocaine, heroin," says Matthew Misson, K9 Enforcement Officer.
A few residents I spoke to told me that if people are going to come into our country, they should do it legally. Because we have enough people to worry about and to take care of.
"I wish we could help them. I wish we could do a lot of things for them, but it's difficult," says Stanley.
Assistant Port Director Misson said the mission of the CBP is anti-terrorism while still facilitating legitimate trade and travel in the United States.
Assistant Area Port Director Chris Misson told us that rumors of a wall being built along the northern border are just that, rumors.
