BP: DNR confirms distemper in gray foxes, raccoons in area

November 20, 2018

BEMIDJI—The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has received confirmation from the University of Minnesota diagnostic lab in St. Paul that distemper is responsible for the recent outbreak of sick gray fox and raccoons in the city of Bemidji and outlying areas, officials said Monday.

Distemper is a virus that can be spread by raccoons, gray fox, coyotes and less commonly, the red fox. The best course of action is to avoid feeding or approaching any wild animal. Domestic pets should be vaccinated, officials said in a release.
