Suspects arrested in La Jolla Tribal check fraud case

Valley Center Sheriff Deputies Thursday night took into custody three suspects related to the theft and possession of La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians fictitious checks. The primary suspect, 31-year-old Michael Reyna of Escondido was taken into custody and charged with Forgery, Burglary, Passing fictitious checks, possession of stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia. Two additional suspects were also taken into custody Andrew Coronado, 18, of Escondido and Barry Liersch, 48, of Valley Center were charged with forgery and conspiracy. Liersch was also charged with drug possession.

The investigation began months ago when the La Jolla Band reported suspicious activities on fictitious checks. Thursday, October 25, Reyna cashed one of the checks at Lilac Foods for $1,800. It was later reported to Lilac Foods by their bank of the checks status. Sheriff Deputy Shull tracked down the suspects at Pala Casino were they were arrested. At the time of the arrest, Reyna had checks in his possession.
