Rock Island schools spending half a million dollars on cultural competency

ROCK ISLAND — The Rock Island-Milan School District's commitment to cultural competency training has grown beyond original plans. Superintendent Mike Oberhaus said it’s a “journey” the district should stick to for improved relationships.

Cultural competence is "having an awareness of one’s own cultural identity and views about difference, and the ability to learn and build on the varying cultural and community norms of students and their families," according to the National Education Association.
