Exploring the tradition of pinecone harvesting

SEVIER – Members of the Paiute tribe demonstrated the traditional way their forbearers roasted pine nuts at the Fremont Indian State Park and Museum Sept. 8.

Rick Pikyavit, Richfield, and his wife, Rena, learned the traditional pine nut roasting process from Rick’s parents. His parents were from Kanosh, and passed on the knowledge of the process to ensure younger generations would be taught and educated about a cultural staple — importance to the heritage of the tribe.
