Sheriff points to many missed chances for quick answers to Jacob Wetterling's fate

September 21, 2018

ST. CLOUD – Investigative mistakes and misplaced effort in the days, weeks and months following the 1989 abduction of Jacob Wetterling prevented authorities from making Danny James Heinrich the prime suspect in a case that would haunt Minnesotans for nearly 30 years.

Based on what investigators learned about Heinrich soon after Wetterling’s disappearance — such as tire tracks, a shoe print and a tip that clearly linked the former Paynesville loner to the case — Heinrich should have been the primary suspect within 48 hours of the kidnapping, Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson said Thursday.
