George William "Billy" King, 82, Indian name Ogema of Red Lake, Minnesota passed away on August 27, 2018 at the Red Lake Hospital surrounded by his family. Billy was born on December 30, 1935 to August King and Mary Jane (Carl) Brun in Red Lake, MN.

Billy joined the Army and served from 1953 to 1956 and was honorably discharged. He then he enlisted in the Marine Corps on January 28, 1960, serving in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged on February 12, 1970.

He married his high school sweet heart Betty Louise (Maxwell) on June 7, 2000 in Las Vegas and they later got their marriage blessed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Red Lake, MN. He attended Red Lake High School and then joined the service. After his honorable discharge, Billy returned to Red Lake and worked for many years at the Sanitation (now Transfer Station) and at the Comp Health as a security guard. Currently he served as Chairman of the Enrollment Committee, served on the Gaming Board, member of the VFW Post 6889, currently served as Head Hereditary Chief of the Red Lake Nation, and was an advocate to giving to several charitable organizations. Billy was a very generous, caring, helpful, kind person, his door was always open to everyone. He was appointed on May 13, 2003 as the Tribal Chairman after the passing of his brother, Gerald F. "Butch" Brun, Tribal Chairman in April 2003. He served as Tribal Chairman until August 2004. Billy enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, family, and friends. He enjoyed going to the casino, traveling, watching western TV shows, history channel, animal planet, and baseball games. He logged and fished in his younger days.

Survived by his wife Betty (Maxwell) King, daughters: Peggy King and Evon Spears both of Red Lake. Brother, Donald (Geraldine) Brun, Sr. of Red Lake. Special daughter: Amy (Sheldon) Kingbird-Brown of Redby. Step children: Arnold (Deb) Maxwell, Gregory Maxwell, Joan (Maynard) LaVallie, Darwin Johnson, Elsie Johnson, Betty (Mark) Stinar, and Gerhard Bud Johnson, Jr. Special Sisters: Delores Lasely, Aldene Morrison, Donna Morrison, Lavonne Schmunk, Lorraine Chaboyea, and Donna Brun. Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents August King and Mary Jane (Carl) Brun. Son, Brian Johnson. Sisters, Gretchen Stately, Bonnie Kingbird, Rose "LaLa" Johns, and Mary "Fady" Johns. Special Sister, Carla Brun. Brothers, Bruce Brun and Gerald "Butch" Brun. Special brother, Billy Jo Morrison and great grandson: Travion Jones.

His funeral will be Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Red Lake Humanities Center in Red Lake, MN. A wake will start on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Red Lake Center and continue until his funeral on Saturday at the Red Lake Humanities Center. Pastor Maynard LaVallie will be officiating the funeral. Active Pallbearers are Donald Brun, Jr., Bruce Johns, Greg Stately, Frank Johns, Brandon Morgan, Shannon (Opie) Barron with Alternates: Darwin Johnson, Arnold Maxwell and grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers are Lawrence Lajeunesse, Danny Hart, Roman "Ducker" Stately, Sr., Jimmy "Plukey" King, Harlan Beaulieu, Oliver Beaulieu, Fabian "Nickel" Cook, Donnie Bo Brun, Marlon Blue, Morris Clark, Gerald "Bud" Beaulieu, Alden "Sonny" Beaulieu, Sr. and the Red Lake Tribal Council Members and Hereditary Chiefs.

Burial will follow at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Red Lake, MN.
