January 6, 1937 ~ July 23, 2018 (age 81)

Lucy Barrett, (Minise-Giniw) which means “Soaring Golden Eagle” and of the Bear Clan, age 81, of Red Lake, MN, began her journey to the spirit world at the Red Lake Hospital on Monday, July 23, 2018 with her family by her side.

A wake for Lucy will begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 28, 2018 and continue until her 1:00 p.m. funeral services, Monday, July 30, 2018 all being held at the New Little Rock Community Center, Red Lake with Fr. Jerry Rogers officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Red Lake. Arrangements were entrusted to the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home.

Active casket bearers will be Duane “Boogins” Cobenais III, Derrick Cobenais, Derald “Ola” Cobenais, Dion Barrett, Alex Barrett, Andrew Barrett, Harlan Johnson, Charlie “Whee” Charnoski, Mike Jourdain, Randy Benais, Guy Packineau and Kenneth Graves.

Lucy Marie Green was born January 6, 1937 in Red Lake, MN to Samuel and Margaret (Johnson) Green. She grew up in Red Lake and then attended Haskell Boarding School in Lawrence, KS. Lucy and her two young children, Cheryl and Gary moved to Chicago, IL were they resided for a few years. She moved back home to take care of her sick mother. She met Richard Barrett, who became the love of her life. Lucy married Richard on December 4, 1965 in Milbank, SD. After marrying Richard, Lucy had two more children, Michelle and Richard, Jr. She worked for the Red Lake Hospital. After 41 years of service as Medical Records Supervisor, she retired in 2004. At the age of 68, she went back to school and received an Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts from Red Lake Nation College in 2007. Lucy then went on to earn a BA in Indian Studies from Bemidji State University. After graduating in 2009, she began working as a professor at Red Lake Nation College. Lucy was very passionate about sharing the knowledge she had learned. She loved her students and working with the staff at the college. She inspired the entire community by being the “grandma student” who put in hundreds of quiet study hours. Lucy enjoyed going to the casino, reading, traveling and watching game shows. Lucy’s most precious moments were spending time with her grandchildren and family.

She is survived by her children, Richard “Rick” (Michelle) Barrett, Jr., Gary Thunder, Cheryl Thunder and Michelle (Barrett) Cobenais all of Red Lake; 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Lucy is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Richard Barrett, Sr .; sister, Margaret (Helen) Benais; brother, William “Sonny” Green and son-in-law, Duane Cobenais, Jr.
