U.S. House OKs removing more salmon-eating sea lions

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA 3rd) aimed at improving the survival of Columbia River salmon and steelhead listed under the federal Endangered Species Act by selectively removing some predatory sea lions from the Columbia River and certain tributaries passed the U.S. House June 26 with a 288-116 vote.

H.R. 2083, the Endangered Salmon and Fisheries Predation Prevention Act, would provide tribal and state resource managers with the means to “rapidly respond” to lethally remove a limited number of California and Steller sea lions from specific areas on the Columbia River where they are posing the most harm to salmon restoration efforts.
