BEMIDJI, MN – The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office is notifying the public that the “Bike Bemidji: Loop the Lake Festival” will be held on Saturday, June 16th, 2018 and 1,000 bicyclists are expected to participate in the ride. This is a family ride, not a race and the course includes local roads as well as trails circling Lake Bemidji.

The course includes Birchmont Drive from Bemidji State University to Northwoods Access/Landing, Bemidji Rd (CR21) from Northwoods Access to Birchmont Beach Rd (CR20) and Birchmont Beach Rd to the entrance of Lake Bemidji State Park. Birchmont Beach Rd (CR20) will be closed for eastbound traffic from 8AM until 12PM from Bemidji Rd to Country Club Rd with traffic detouring north on Bemidji Rd to Sumac Rd to Country Club Rd and south back to Birchmont Beach Rd. Westbound traffic on Birchmont Beach Rd will not be detoured. Residents that live within the closure are asked to ONLY travel WESTBOUND.

On the east side of Lake Bemidji the bicyclists will be using the Paul Bunyan Trail and are required to stop at each road crossing but motorists are urged to drive with heightened caution when crossing the trail. The following laws and safety tips can help reduce the risk of accidents and injuries. Additional information can be found at:

Bicyclists may ride on all Minnesota roads, except where restricted.

Bicyclists should ride on the road, and must ride in the same direction as traffic.

Motorists must at all times maintain a three-foot clearance when passing a bicyclist.

Bicyclists must obey all traffic control signs and signals, just as motorists.

Motorists and bicyclists must yield the right-of-way to each other.

Bicyclists must signal their turns and should ride in a predictable manner.

Bicyclists must use a headlight and rear reflectors when it's dark. To increase visibility, add a rear flashing light.

Bicyclists should always wear helmets.
