School safety concerns on rise in R.I., according to statewide survey

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Only one in two Rhode Island families say they feel their children are safe from violence in their schools, a dramatic decline of 22 percentage points from spring 2017, according to a survey commissioned by the state Department of Education.

Families and students say they feel less safe about their schools in the wake of a rash of school shootings this winter, most notably the Parkland, Florida, shooting on Feb. 14, which spurred a groundswell of gun-control activism by students across the country.
