I-35W weekend closure in Minneapolis scheduled June 1-4

26th Street bridge over I-35W to close June 1

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Interstate 35W will close in both directions between Interstate 94 and Highway 62 in Minneapolis, beginning at 10 p.m., Friday, June 1, as crews demolish the 26th Street bridge. Southbound I-35W will be open to traffic south of 46th Street.

Crews will begin closing the on and off ramps for I-35W approximately one hour before closing the interstate.

Motorists will be detoured around the closure using Interstate 394, Highway 100 and Highway 62. I-35W will reopen to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday, June 4.

In addition, the 26th Street bridge spanning I-35W will close beginning at 6 a.m., Friday, June 1 for reconstruction. Motorists should follow the posted detour using southbound Portland Avenue to westbound Lake Street to northbound First Avenue S. The new 26th Street bridge is expected to open in mid-November 2018. The Franklin Avenue bridge will reopen to pedestrians, bicyclists and emergency vehicles June 1, but will remain closed to motorists. The Franklin Avenue bridge is anticipated to reopen to motorist in mid-June; westbound motorists should follow the posted detour for the 26th Street bridge closure.

In addition to the I-35W weekend closure, there are two other upcoming weekend closures: I-94, between I-394 and I-35W, will close June 8-11, and another I-35W weekend closure will occur June 15-18.

Motorists should plan ahead and provide additional time to reach their destinations.

These closures are part of the larger four-year 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown reconstruction project on I-35W between 43rd Street and downtown Minneapolis. The work includes reconstructing pavement, bridges and ramps on I-35W, adding new access ramps to the Lake Street Business District, building a new transit station on the interstate and constructing new MnPASS lanes. Once complete, motorists and residents will have better accessibility, safety and mobility in the area. Work is expected to be completed in fall 2021. To learn more about the project, visit:
