Stephen-Argyle will play Mountain Iron-Buhl in first round of State Tournament on Thursday

Section 8A Championship (at Thief River Falls) – Red Lake 49 vs. Stephen-Argyle 56

THIEF RIVER FALLS - The Stephen-Argyle Storm hit some clutch free throws in the last ninety seconds of the game to win the Section 8A championship Friday night in Thief River Falls.

A paid attendance of 1,644 enjoyed an exciting contest that wasn't pretty at times but kept the fans on the edge of their seats all night.

Senior Autumn Thompson missed her first three throw but made her next nine in a row as the Storm won their second section title in four years. Thompson scored 17 points for Stephen-Argyle with her last eight points all coming on free throws.

The Storm won the game despite committing 32 turnovers in the game compared to 17 turnovers for Red Lake. The Storm played tough defense against the Warriors as Red Lake had averaged 83 points per game in their three previous post season games.

Stephen-Argyle held Red Lake scoreless for the first 3:48 of the second half and built their lead to twelve at 34-22.

Red Lake would go on an 11-2 run and eventually tie the game at 47-47.The game was tied at 49-49 with 1:15 remaining but the Warriors would not score another point. It was similiar to the December 14th meeting between the two teams when the Storm scored the games final 14 points enroute to a 75-62 win over the Warriors at the Northland Holiday Tournament.

Angel McClain led Red Lake with 17 points as the defending Section 8A champions end their season at 27-4 and had their 12 game winning streak come to an end.

The win was the seventh straight for Stephen-Argyle as they take a 27-3 record into the State Tournament. There they will face Mount Iron Buhl (28-2) at 3 PM Thursday, March 15th at Williams Arena.

The Warriors will graduate four seniors in Alexis Desjarlait, Alysha Beaulieu, Tammy May and Cassidy Defoe.
