Bemidji Pioneer: Spill fears rise even as Line 3 backers vow new pipeline will be safe

CLEARWATER COUNTY—Paul Stolen waded through deep snow down a steep valley toward LaSalle Creek, about four miles north of Lake Itasca, where the Mississippi River begins, and contemplated what would happen if an oil pipeline ruptured in this spot.

"You're not going to be able to clean up the oil, if it reaches the bottom of the valley," the retired Minnesota Department of Natural Resources biologist said recently as he walked the tract. You're "simply not going to do that, because of the nature of the wetland soils and the uniqueness of this area."
