One more game to return to State Tournament
Thief River Falls - The Red Lake Lady Warriors captured the Section 8A East Championship title for the second year in a row at the Ralph Engelstad Arena on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, defeating Win-E-Mac 83-49. They will play for the Section 8A Championship and a chance to return to the state tournament next week against #1 of the West Section 8A Champions Stephen-Argyle on Friday, March 9th at 7 PM at the REA. Red Lake won Section 8A last year over East Grand Forks Sacred Heart.
Red Lake scored first against Win-E-Mac, hitting them with their full-court press and attacking the basket. By the 13:03 mark they built up their lead to 9 points, 13-4, and led by 12 with 6:46 left in the first half.
They were pretty much always in control and although playing aggressive on defense, they stayed away from committing too many fouls. By the end of the first half, they led by 21 points, 44-23.
In the second half the Lady Warriors didn't let up and at one point led by 34 points at the 12:50 mark, and when the Patriots would seem like they were trying to make a come back, Red Lake answered basket per basket. The final score ended up at 83-49 and the reserves came in with 3 minutes left in the game.
Red Lake had four players in double figures. Angel McClain led with a solid 30 points on the night, Autumn Holthusen hit for 17, Alexis Desjarlait added 14, Gericka Kingbird had a dozen, Kelanna McClain put in 6, and Elise White and Tammy May each had 2.
The Lady Warriors are on a 12 game winning streak and improved to 27-3 on the year. They will be playing for the Section 8A Championship on Friday, March 9th at 7 PM at REA against Stephen-Argyle, now 26-3 after narrowly defeating Badger-Greenbush-Middle River 52-48 to claim the Section 8A West Championship.. The winner goes to the Minnesota State Tournament and the loser's season will end. Earlier in December of this season Red Lake lost to the Stephen-Argyle Storm at the Northland CTC Tournament 75-62.
