Northbird Wins DFL Endorsement for District 2A

Michael Northbird won the DFL endorsement for the District 2A legislative seat in the MN legislature at the DFL District 2 Endorsing Convention held today Saturday, March 17, 2018 held at Mahnomen Elementary School. Northbird was opposed by one candidate.

District 2A runs from Baudette at Lake of the Woods, south to Park Rapids and includes all of Red Lake Indian Reservation and Lake of the Woods County, most of Clearwater and Hubbard and Counties and western and northern Beltrami County. He will attempt to defeat the Republican incumbent this coming November with a little help from many friends.

"If Northbird wins we have a no pipeline, no sulfide mining, no wolf hunting, Anishinaabe Representative," noted local environmental activist Barry Babcock. "He received well over two-thirds of the delegate votes! Now the real fight starts! He's a smart, good looking candidate....I hope he will win!"

Northbird Supports:

· More opportunities for Minnesota families to have jobs with supportable wages

· Local agriculture and local farm-to-table initiatives

· STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) initiative

· Renewable energy & reducing energy costs while promoting clean air, water, & protecting natural resources

· Sensible development, infrastructure investment, and housing

· Veterans, youth, and elder issues

· Health care and battling the drug epidemic

Northbird has been an Environmental Program Manager for the past nine years, currently employed by the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. Prior to that he was a civil engineer for over a decade working on various projects across northern Minnesota and neighboring states.

"Northern Minnesota is a beautiful destination, a great place to raise a family and I intend to keep it that way," said Northbird. "Our future as Minnesotans depends on cohesiveness and the ability to stand strong together as a State. Fighting for local communities and the people of District 2A will be my utmost priority. To ensure we are not forgotten, I will work diligently alongside my fellow legislators to solidify the ideals of District 2A and protect the people from being left behind in the decades to come."

Northbird was born and raised in Cass Lake. He currently lives in Farden Township in northern Hubbard County just west of Cass Lake with his wife of nine years and a daughter who is a junior at Cass Lake-Bena High School.

Northbird is a member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe enrolled in the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, but also a direct descendent of Red Lake Nation. His great-grandmother is sister to his great-great-uncle Thomas J. Stillday Jr., a well-known and respected Red Lake spiritual leader, now passed.
