Fulton County, GA, ramps up activities in response to high flu activity

The Fulton County Board of Health increased its educational outreach and flu vaccination activities in response to the high levels of flu activity seen in their community this season.

Health officials have been talking to local television, radio, and newspaper reporters about the flu, possible complications from flu, and the best ways the public can protect themselves this season. In addition, the Board of Health is posting frequently to its Facebook page and Twitter account about flu. One video explains the importance of vaccination, where people can go to get a flu vaccine, and steps to take if people get the flu.

In addition, the Board of Health is reaching some of the Atlanta area’s most vulnerable populations by offering vaccinations at homeless shelters and actively encouraging Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clientele to get their flu vaccination during their regular appointments.

“We held four clinics at homeless shelters in January and are holding another four this month,” said Fulton County Board of Health Immunization Coordinator, Georgia Goseer.

Providing facts about flu and flu vaccination is important, said Goseer. “We’re having to dispel rumors about the vaccine being ineffective,” she explained, adding that educational outreach will continue to be emphasized as long as flu activity remains high. “I think it’s going to continue for a while. We won’t slow down with our presentations to the public.”
