CN awarding $5.4M to NE Oklahoma schools

CATOOSA – The Cherokee Nation will distribute a record $5.4 million to 108 northeast Oklahoma school districts at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, during the tribe’s annual Public School Appreciation Day.

Each year the tribe allocates 38 percent of tax revenue from the sale of tribal car tags to help schools pay for additional teaching salaries, advanced student coursework, classroom technology and other needs.

This year’s distribution is an increase of about $400,000 compared to 2017’s disbursement.

An expansion of the tribe’s motor vehicle tag sales jurisdiction in 2014 allowed the CN to fund additional northeast Oklahoma schools in recent years. Previously, only school districts within the tribe’s 14-county jurisdiction were awarded money.

The Hard Rock is located at 777 W. Cherokee St.
