Al Franken will resign from Senate; Dayton says he'll pick replacement in coming days

Minnesota U.S. Sen. Al Franken announced his resignation Thursday after allegations of sexual misconduct by multiple women toppled support from his Democratic peers.

In a speech on the Senate floor, Franken, at times somber and at times defiant, said he could no longer serve effectively amid the steady stream of accusers — a list that had grown to eight the prior evening.
