First Nations seek retroactive payment

Around the time of the British conquest of New France, the British were viewed with some apprehension by the First Nation peoples who lived in what is now Ontario and Quebec, a history professor testified Monday at a Superior Court trial in Sudbury.

That was because the First Nations considered the land the French had built their forts on to still belong to them and the British should not just walk in and take those structures over, but negotiate their use first, said Alain Beaulieu of the University of Quebec at Montreal.
