Birch Bark Ornaments - with Emily Derke

When: Tuesday, Dec. 5th | 6 – 8pm

Saturday, Dec. 9th | 9am – 1pm

Who: All levels of experience, 18 and older (RSVP Required. Limited number of spots available.)

Create an ornamental woven star using strips of birch bark, then make the twine to hang it up using basswood bark! You will create a beautful decoraton of your own, while learning about the way these local materials are harvested and prepared. The class will be led be weaver and local woods-woman, Emily Derke. You have two opportunities to attend – spend a Tuesday evening or enjoy this class for

longer during the Saturday session.

Tuesday class (2 hours): Students will take home one handmade ornament | $30 ($25 for Headwaters members)

Saturday class (4 hours): Students will take home several handmade ornaments | $40 ($35 for Headwaters members)

Emily spends much of her tme weaving baskets, collectng material to work with, and harvestng, cooking, and experimenting with the local wild foods. Currently, Emily is living in a cozy yurt in northern Minnesota, and contnuing to explore other traditional skills and crafts. Over the last decade, the search for knowledge and experience has brought her from her home in Minnesota, to both the east and west coasts to learn from many experienced teachers.
