David Lee Castaneda, age 56, of Ponemah, Minnesota began his spiritual journey on Sunday, June 11, 2017 from the Sanford Hospital in Bemidji, Minnesota. He was born on October 21, 1960 in Warren, Minnesota to Jesus and Mary (Black) Castaneda.

David lived in Oslo, Minnesota at a young age and moved to Ponemah around age eight. He attended school in Red Lake and followed with the Job Corps in Minneapolis where he lived and worked. He moved to Brainerd for a short time before moving home to Ponemah. He turned his passion for cooking into jobs as a cook for both the Elderly Nutrition Program in Ponemah and the Seven Clans Casino in Thief River Falls. He liked to play cards. He raised his granddaughter from the age of two months, but loved spending time with all of his grandbabies.

He is welcomed to the spirit world by his parents; Jesus and Mary, brother; Rick, sister; Lucille and several other relatives.

He is survived by his son; David (Candace) Rosebear of Ponemah, daughters; Rochell Castanada of Marshall and Angel (Brian) Rosebear of Ponemah, brothers; Donald Iceman of Red Lake, Marvin Iceman and Darrell Geshik both of Ponemah, adopted sister; Gayle Downwind of Red Lake, eight grandchildren, cousins; Debbie Cloud, Phillip Fineday, Jr., Robert Fineday, Frieda Fineday and Annie Fineday, other relatives and friends.

A wake for David will begin at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, June 15, 2017 and continue until his traditional service at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, June 17, 2017 all being held at the Boys and Girls Club in Ponemah, MN. Steve Jackson will be his spiritual advisor. Pallbearers for David will be all of his family and friends. His honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren; Ysabel, DeAnthony, Jake, Layla, Kayleigh, David, Jr. and Ransom. Interment will be in the Family Burial Grounds at Mahquambay, Minnesota following his Saturday service.
