Bemidji Pioneer: Red Lake man arrested after hammer assault

BEMIDJI -- A Red Lake man was charged with first-degree assault Wednesday, four days after allegedly beating another man with a hammer, leaving him in critical condition.

According to a criminal complaint, Dean Wayne Stately, 27, assaulted the victim June 3 at the Grassy Lake Mobile Home Park. The victim -- referred to in documents as R.N. -- and a witness had been babysitting the homeowner’s children, documents say; the witness was sleeping in a back bedroom and the victim was sleeping on the living room couch while the children played outside.
