Red Lake stumbles in 93-46 loss to Minneapolis North in opening round of Class A State Tournament - P32

Minneapolis North 83, Red Lake 46:

Defending MSHSL Class A champion #1 Minneapolis North Community (30-2) advances to the state semifinals with a 93-46 win over Red Lake (25-5) on Thursday at Williams Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

The Polars, competing in the state tournament for the 21st time in program history, are seeking a seventh state title. They'll face the #5 Springfield / #4 Nevis winner in the semifinals on Friday at noon at Target Center in Minneapolis.

Red Lake moves to the consolation semifinals to face the losing team of that quarterfinal on Friday at 10 a.m. at Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia-St. Paul.

North's active hands and aggressive defense early in the game held the Warriors to 0-10 shooting with seven turnovers as the Polars forced five steals in jumping out to a 27-3 lead just seven minutes into play.

Red Lake started converting baskets efficiently from that point on, making 11 of its next 23 shots and committing only five more turnovers in the last 11 minutes of the half.

But North was an offensive machine throughout the half, making 24-39 from the field, a 61.5 first half percent to mount a 62-29 lead at the break.

The Polars led by at least 28 the entire second half and expanded the final margin to a game-high 47. In the final tally, North held a 23-5 edge in points off turnovers and 25-7 on the fastbreak.

O'Dell Wilson IV led North with 21 points and 11 rebounds on 9-13 shooting in just 18 minutes while Isaac Johnson had 20 points on 8-15 shooting including three three-pointers. Tayler Johnson added 18 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots.

Rob McClain Jr. led Red Lake with a strong all-around game, scoring 12 points with nine rebounds, seven steals and five assists while Jamie Cook made three three-pointers.

Springfield 73, Nevis 65: #5 Springfield (29-2) has advanced to the Class A state semifinals, topping #4 Nevis (28-2) 73-65 in the quarterfinals at Williams Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota. In Springfield's last trip to the MSHSL Class A State Tournament in 2011, the Springfield Tigers were crowned state champions. They'll face defending Class A champion Minneapolis North Community on Friday at noon at Target Center with a trip to the title game on the line. Nevis will head across the river to Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia-St. Paul where they'll face Red Lake in the consolation semifinals at 10 a.m. on Friday. It was a game of swings as Nevis led by late in the first half, heading into the break up nine, 31-22 behind 52.2 percent (12-23) first half shooting, holding Springfield to 37.5 percent (9-24). Nevis also made five of nine from the arc while Springfield was just one of eight. In the second half, Springfield wasted no time switching the momentum, starting the half with a 10-0 spurt to claim a 32-31 lead with 14:36 to play in the game. That was the start of a larger game swing that saw Springfield outscore Nevis 36-12 in a span of over thirteen and a half minutes of action from late in the first half until the 5:54 mark of the second. Trailing 56-42, the largest deficit of the game, Nevis stormed back, cutting the lead to just four two times down the stretch, with 1:45 to play (64-60) and with 1:09 to play (66-62) but never had a possession with a chance to tie or take the lead. In the tale of two halves format, Springfield reversed its 37.5 percent first half shooting to make 69.2 percent (18-26) in the second while Nevis shot just 33.3 percent (11-33) after the strong 52.2 percent start. For the game, Springfield finished at 54.0 percent (27-50) while Nevis shot 41.1 percent (23-56). Isaac Fink had a double-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists while Kale Meendering had 22 points on 10-14 shooting for Springfield. Nevis was led by Michael Landquist with 24 points on 9-18 shooting and Griffin Chase had 14 points and seven assists.

Goodhue 57, Lake Park-Audubon 37: The No. 2-seeded Goodhue Wildcats capitalized on a 34-20 halftime advantage and went on to defeat the unseeded Lake Park-Audubon Raiders 57-37. Goodhue also went on a 19-0 scoring binge over 10 minutes in the second half. Overall, Goodhue shot 42.2 percent from the field and also went 11-of-22 from behind the arc. Lake Park-Audubon went 45.2 percent from the field on 14-of-31 shooting. Three players finished in double-figures for the Wildcats: Nicholas Thomforde with 15 points; Taylor Buck with 12 points; and Ben Opsahl with 10 points. Lucas Thomforde had five steals for Goodhue. Jesse Bergh tallied 17 points and nine rebounds for Lake Park-Audubon. Grant Pederson added 10 points and four steals for the Raiders.

North Woods 54, Central Minnesota Christian 51: With the score tied at 51-51 and one second remaining in regulation, North Woods' Cade Goggleye released a shot from behind the half-court line and sunk it. And, the first-time qualifiers from North Woods of Cook won 54-51 over Central MN Christian of Prinsburg. The score was tied 26-26 at half and see-sawed back and forth throughout the second half. Overall, North Woods shot 40.5 percent from the field and Central MN Christian was 44.2 percent. Tate Olson led the Grizzlies with 16 points and Brendan Parson added another 14. Goggleye finished with 12 points, seven assists, and four steals. Matthew Van Epps and Ethan Brouwer tallied 17 and 16 points, respectively, for Central MN Christian. Brouwer also had a team-high 14 rebounds for the Bluejays.
