7th Annual Red Lake Nation Elder's Gathering held in Red Lake - P6

RED LAKE - Over 400 elders gathered on Monday, May 1, 2017 at the Seven Clans Casino Event Center, all to take part in Day One of Red Lake's 7th Annual Elder's Gathering.

Breakfast and registration began at 8 AM, followed by Opening Ceremonies of the Red Lake Nation Honor Guard, Red Lake Royalty, Honor Songs by the drum group Eyabay and the Welcome and Opening Remarks by Red Lake Tribal Chairman Darrell Seki, Sr.

The event, open to Red Lake Elders 55 and over, was designed to be both informative and entertaining, as a session on Home Health Care and Personal Care Assistant Information was presented, followed by a presentation by John Nicholson on "Balancing our Lifestyles," and entertainment by a music band from the Turtle Mountain Reservation called "Travesty," and a dance contest with prizes of $150.00, $100.00, $75.00 and $25.00 for 1st thru 5th places.

Last year's Queen, Elizabeth "Pug" Kingbird took first in that competition

In the afternoon the Ponemah Dance Troupe put on an exhibition, followed by a Drug Awareness and Other Topics presentation put on by the Red Lake Public Safety Department.

Other activities scheduled for the evening include cribbage and slot tournaments for cash prizes.

The gathering will continue Tuesday at starting at 8 a.m. with breakfast, followed by a welcome address by Amaya Pemberton, a performance by the Red Lake High School Band, followed by Canadian Native American comedian Don Burnstick prior to the crowning of this years King and Queen.
