Red Lake Students Compete at State History Day

On Saturday, April 29, 2017, students from Red Lake Middle and High School competed at the Minnesota State Contest of National History Day. Each year, more than 25,000 students participate in History Day throughout Minnesota; this year only 1,274 made it to the state level.

Ten students from Red Lake Middle School competed in the junior level: Amber McNeal, Azlynn Jourdain, Nataya Neadeau, Santana Cloud, TeAnndra Pemberton-Kingbird, Sierra May, Kelanna McClain, LaTayla Pemberton, Adrianna Duque, and Kiah McKenzie.

Red Lake Middle School teacher Rachel Boughton was honored with the "Travel Teacher Award." This award is given each year by Minnesota History Day to one teacher. Boughton will travel to the National History Day competition to assist the Minnesota History Day team and participate in the judging process and workshops.

Five students from Red Lake High School competed in the senior level, with two projects receiving honorable mentions: Violet May, Elizabeth Barrett, Quinten Chaboyea, Autumn May, Angel McClain, and Joelle Drouilliard. For her individual exhibit project, titled "Standing Tall in a Sea of Pines" on the topic of Red Lake's reforestation efforts, Ms. May was a state finalist and received an honorable mention award. For their documentary, titled "He Who Is Spoken To: Taking a Stand For Future Generations" on the topic of Red Lake's decision to remain a sovereign nation, Ms. Barrett and Mr. Chaboyea were state finalists and received an honorable mention award in addition to the topical prize for Minnesota History.
