Death penalty handed down in tribal shooting

ALTURAS — A California judge has imposed the death penalty on a Modoc County woman convicted in December for a deadly 2014 attack at an Alturas tribal center, while a request for a re-trial was denied.

On Monday Judge Candace Beason sentenced Cherie Louise Rhoades, 47, to capital punishment for a Feb. 20, 2014, shooting and stabbing that left four dead at the Cedarville Rancheria Tribal Office and Community Center. Rhoades was also sentenced to 150 years in prison for injuring two other victims and ordered to pay $64,000 in restitution.
