Minnesota House debate on protesting bill turns ugly

ST. PAUL—Debate on a controversial "anti-protest" bill erupted into a heated clash about race on the Minnesota Capitol's House floor this week — including an accusation of a concurrent "white male card game" in a back room — leaving legislators asking for apologies all around, and getting none.

Talk began routinely enough over legislation drafted in response to recent Black Lives Matter marches that have blocked streets, highways and, at one point, the entrance of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. In broad terms, the legislation would increase criminal penalties for blocking state "transit" from a misdemeanor to a gross misdemeanor.
