Businessman donates 200 acres to local Cahuilla tribe

A 200-acre gift of east valley land to the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians could provide affordable housing for more than 1,200 people, the tribe announced Wednesday.

The land, located off of Johnson Street and Highway 111 in Mecca, is close to the Torres Martinez reservation and is, Tribal Chairman Thomas Tortez said, the tribe’s “ancestral land.” But it was only recently returned to them after Costa Mesa businessman and investor Ken Fait, through his company Facilities Management West, Inc., reached out in November, asking if the tribe would be interested in the land. On Dec. 31, Fait signed over the deed to the tribe.
