DAVID T. SCHULTZ SELECTED TO SERVE AS NEXT U.S. MAGISTRATE JUDGE

John R. Tunheim, Chief U.S. District Judge, is pleased to announce that the Court has selected David D. Schultz to serve as its next U.S. Magistrate Judge. Schultz will replace Magistrate Judge Janie S. Mayeron who is retiring. Schultz will take the oath of office on February 7, 2017. A formal investiture ceremony will be held at a later date.

Chief Judge John R. Tunheim noted, “The Court is extremely pleased that David Schultz will be our next Magistrate Judge. He has had an outstanding career as a lawyer and will bring a strong sense of fairness and a passion for justice to his responsibilities as a judge.”

The U.S. District Judges of the District of Minnesota appointed a fifteen-member Merit Selection Panel to review applications, interview prospective candidates, and recommend to the District Judges the candidates they deemed best qualified for the position. Attorneys Cliff Greene and Cathy Haukedahl co-chaired the Panel, which consisted of thirteen attorneys and two lay-members of the public.

Schultz graduated from Stanford Law School in 1985 and received his bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, from Carleton College. Prior to his appointment, Schultz was a partner at Maslon LLP for 11 years, where he focused his practice on high stakes litigation in the areas of product liability, healthcare, commercial disputes, civil and criminal fraud, and intellectual property. As a litigator, he tried cases to verdict in state and federal courts throughout the country and developed an active appellate practice, having argued more than 50 cases before several federal circuits as well as the Minnesota Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. Before joining Maslon, Schultz was a partner at Nilan Johnson Lewis, PA and an Assistant Attorney General under Attorney General Hubert H. ("Skip") Humphrey.

Schultz is board certified as a Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and as a Civil Trial Specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association. In addition, he has taught trial advocacy at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) as well as legal writing at the University of Minnesota Law School and William Mitchell College of Law. He has lectured on constitutional law at Carleton College and criminal law to undergraduates while a law student at Stanford University.

Amidst his vibrant law practice, Schultz regularly devoted hundreds of hours to pro bono representation every year and served on the Board of Innocence Project of Minnesota (IPMN). As a result of his tireless work to help free the wrongfully convicted and reform the criminal justice system, he was recognized with the IPMN's 2016 "Never Forgotten Award." He was also selected as a Minnesota Lawyer 2016 Attorney of the Year.

United States Magistrate Judges are appointed by the District Judges of the U.S. District Court for a term of eight years and are eligible for reappointment to successive terms. After taking the oath, Schultz will chamber in the U.S. Courthouse in Minneapolis.
