Native American Tribe Protesting in Mahwah to Stop Pipeline Proposed to Run Throughout Northern NJ

A Ramapough Lenape tribe has put up a small colony of tents and tepees sit on a plot of land the tribe owns in Mahwah, NJ along the Ramapo River to protest an oil pipeline that is expected to run through northern New Jersey, reports NorthJersey.com. The Township of Mahwah has issued the tribe court summonses for allegedly violated zoning law by not seeking a permit to build on land deemed a conservation and flood zone. The tribe was also cited for allegedly moving soil without permission. A court date is set for January 26.

Coalition Against Pilgrim Pipeline states that Pilgrim Pipeline Holdings, LLC wants to install two parallel pipelines, 170 miles each (between Albany, NY and Linden, NJ) plus over 12 miles of single-pipe lateral lines that would transport an estimated 16.8 million gallons of crude oil south and refined product north daily. The pipelines would cross 5 NJ counties, 6 NY counties, 30 NJ towns, 25 NY municipalities, and environmentally fragile areas/sources for water. You can sign a petition to stop the pipeline here.
