School finance formula to provide lawmakers with daunting task

Lawmakers face the most daunting task on education policy this coming year they can possibly tackle: writing a new school finance formula while responding to a high court order that will likely require additional funding.

Kansas has been building up to this moment for years through court rulings and legislative fights, and now it is here.

The Legislature repealed the state’s school finance formula in 2015 and replaced it with a temporary, two-year block grant system. Time is ticking on the block grants’ expiration.
