Woman found at kidnapping scene died of homicidal violence

BEMIDJI -- A woman found dead at the scene of a June mobile home fire died of homicidal violence before the blaze, from which a 5-year-old girl was also kidnapped, according to a search warrant.

The warrant, requesting the cell phone records of Jacob Kinn, the man charged with the kidnapping, said the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office concluded that Melissa Sue Norby, 35, died of homicidal violence. Norby was found in the burned-out mobile home underneath a mattress with her arms bound.

Kinn, 33, of Bemidji, has not been charged in connection with Norby’s death. He was arrested June 23 in connection with the kidnapping of the 5-year-old after she was found alive early that morning in a pop-up camper near Bigfork, Minn., on property belonging to Kinn’s brother. Police discovered that the child was missing the previous day after they responded to the fire at the 3900 block of Irvine Avenue.
