63rd MINNESOTA YMCA YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT MODEL ASSEMBLY BRINGS YOUTH TOGETHER FOR STATE'S LARGEST HANDS-ON CIVIC EDUCATION EVENT JANUARY 5-8

St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota YMCA, a leading nonprofit dedicated to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, will welcome 1,350 students in grades eight through 12 to the Minnesota State Capitol January 5-8 for the Youth in Government (YIG) Model Assembly.

At the 63rd YIG Model Assembly, the state’s largest hands-on civic education event, participants from 43 schools and YMCA-based delegations take on roles as legislators, lobbyists, lawyers, judges, justices and journalists and practice open government without the confines of partisanship. Some YIG participants have gone on to public office, including Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon. Others have become advocates, attorneys, engineers, businesspeople and more as active, engaged citizens.

“Model Assembly is an opportunity for YIG participants to connect with their peers from across the state and explore different areas of public policy,” said Orville Lindquist, state program executive for Minnesota YMCA Youth in Government. “Our students grow to be confident leaders and lifelong citizens, developing an appreciation and respect for the diversity of viewpoints on public issues.”

Students elect their peers to leadership roles within each branch of government. The 2017 youth governor is Tyler Zitzewitz, a senior from the Lakeville delegation, and the 2017 youth lieutenant governor is Hudson Fredericks, also a senior from the Lakeville delegation.
