Sanford Bemidji to debut diabetes prevention program

BEMIDJI—Sanford Health plans to implement a program to help Bemidji-area residents avoid diabetes.

The hospital's year-long diabetes prevention program is scheduled to begin Feb. 21 at Sanford Bemidji, and aims to teach participants how to lose a modest amount of weight, be more physically active and manage stress—steps that research shows can help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

"One in three American adults has prediabetes, so the need for prevention has never been greater," Heather Tverstol, a Sanford registered nurse and a "lifestyle coach" for the program, said in a statement.
