Unspecified threat made against Northern MN Schools-precautions taken by schools and local law enforcement

On Wednesday, November 16, 2016 the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office and Bemidji Police Department received information from the Minnesota Fusion Center reporting that they had received information that an unspecified violent incident would occur at a Northern Minnesota School.

The subsequent investigation conducted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) agents have identified a juvenile who on Wednesday posted a message in an online chat room threatening violence at an unnamed northern Minnesota school. Based on their investigation, the BCA has determined that there is no ongoing threat to schools related to this incident.

Through their investigation, BCA agents identified a possible IP address at a residence in St. Louis County. Last night, BCA agents and officers from the East Range Police Department identified a juvenile male at the residence who admitted to making the threat. Investigators determined the juvenile had no access to weapons. The juvenile and a parent at the residence are cooperating with law enforcement.

Bemidji/Beltrami County Schools were notified and precautions were taken by the schools and local law enforcement.

“The Bemidji Police Department and Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office immediately increased its presence and patrols of our local schools” stated Beltrami County Chief Deputy Ernie Beitel.

The Minnesota bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) received a report early this morning from an individual who was participating in an anonymous online chat with an unknown individual. The unknown individual claimed to be considering carrying out violence Wednesday at a northern Minnesota school. No other information was provided. The BCA began investigating immediately and is currently attempting to identify the source and validity of the threat. Acting on the side of caution, the BCA notified northern Minnesota law enforcement agencies and recommended they remain vigilant in regards to school related violence until the BCA can substantiate the validity of the claim. The BCA continues to investigate, but at this time there is nothing to substantiate a specific threat.
