CASS LAKE -- Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School was filled with typical late-afternoon commotion Tuesday, except in a single classroom, where a lone woman held dozens of students and staff in thrall.
Gaelynn Lea played a series of somber fiddle tunes -- a mix of Celtic and American standards and original compositions of her own -- as part of Minnesota Public Radio’s “Class Notes Artists” program. A classically-trained violinist-turned-fiddler, Lea won NPR Music’s “Tiny Desk Contest” last spring and got involved with the Class Notes program, through which she’s touring several schools, including Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig, to further arts education there.
“Most kids nowadays don't have music every day. A lot of the programs that I’m going to don't have any strings,” Lea said, adding that many of the students she performs for have never been to a concert before and the program can show them “what’s out there.”
