DNR sets winter walleye regs for Upper Red Lake

RED LAKE-The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said Monday it will allow anglers in Upper Red Lake to keep three walleye, but only one of them may be longer than 17 inches.

The regulations, effective Dec. 1, are the same that were in place during last winter's fishing season.

"These regulations were very well accepted by anglers and meet our harvest plan objectives by spreading harvest over a wide range of sizes and removing some of the surplus spawning stock," said Bemidji area DNR fisheries supervisor Gary Barnard in a press release.

In a fall assessment by the DNR and the Red lake Band of Chippewa, walleye abundance was excellent with large numbers of fish from 12 to 20 inches.
