Denver Adds Four To 2017-18 Roster

Red Lake’s Grace White is one of them

DENVER - The University of Denver women's basketball head coach Kerry Cremeans announced the signing on four players for the upcoming 2017-18 season on Wednesday. Carie Weinman (Glenview, Ill.), Claire Gritt (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Sidney Wentland (Elk River, Minn.) and Grace White (Redby, Minn.).

"In signing Carie, Claire, Grace and Sidney, we have added a lot of strength, size and depth to our team." said Cremeans. "They are versatile and tough, and this class, collectively, continues to elevate our program to another level."

Claire Gritt

Gritt, who comes out of John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, Ill., is a very skilled combination guard who is deceptively athletic and powerful. Gritt was named an Adidas Top-40 Three-Stripe All-American and was a third team IBCA All-State in her junior campaign. Cremeans describes her as physical, competitive and aggressive.

Cremeans on Gritt:

"Claire is a strong, physical guard with a competitive streak that coaches love. She uses her body very well around the rim and is an outstanding finisher with contact. Claire can score at a high level and also create opportunities for others as a versatile combo guard."

Why did you choose the University of Denver?

"I chose Denver because everything just felt right about it. I loved the team, coaches, school, campus and the location. Compared to some of the other schools I was being recruited by, Denver was the perfect campus size for me."

Carie Weinman

Weinman is a 5-foot-9 shooting guard hailing from Glenbrook High School in Glenview, Ill. She is a big time shooter and a very strong defender who will add size and athleticism to the perimeter. Weinman was an Adidas Top-40 Three-Stripe All-American and named to the fourth-team IBCA All-State as a junior. Cremeans sees Weinman as tenacious, a scorer and athletic.

Cremeans on Weinman:

"Carie Weinman can spread the floor with her long distance shooting ability. She adds length and athleticism and will be a terrific defensive stopper for us. She is a classic wing and strong defender, who is developing other parts of her game to become a nice all-around player."

Why did you choose the University of Denver?

"I chose the University of Denver because of the people. The coaching staff goes above and beyond and it's visible how much they genuinely care about each player. I also made my decision based on the quality of the school and the fact that I will be receiving an outstanding education."

Sidney Wentland

Wentland comes to DU from Elk River High School in Elk River, Minn. She is a 5-foot-11 power forward who will add significant size, strength and versatility to the Denver roster. Wentland is an excellent shooter and can play the two through five position in the Summit League. Wentland collected accolades by ESPN as she was ranked 39th in the country at her position by the sports source. She is a four year starter who was All-Conference for three years. In three words, Cremeans describes Wentland as strong, versatile and glue.

Cremeans on Wentland:

"Sidney is your quintessential glue player who does everything well. She is a skilled shooter and small forward who adds significant size and strength on the perimeter while also having the skills to play a small power forward. She plays hard and seems to always be in the right place at the right time."

Why did you choose the University of Denver?

"I chose the University of Denver because it is a great school academically with a great coaching staff and beautiful location."

Grace White

White joins the DU squad from Red Lake High School in Red Lake, Minn., where she averaged 24 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and three steals per game. White has also scored over 1,000 points on her career. Cremeans views White as unselfish, versatile and skilled.

Cremeans on White:

"Grace is a versatile, all-around perimeter player with a very high basketball IQ. Her heady play and seeing one play ahead on both ends is what sets her apart. She can rebound and pass, which is one of her best attributes, along with her unselfishness. Because of her tremendous size, Grace could feasibly play the 1-4 positions on the court."

Why did you choose the University of Denver?

"I chose DU because of the benefits and how perfect it fit me. The team is in the Summit League which allows my people to make it to my games such as NDSU and SDSU."

"These four players will fit our system perfectly, and our expectations of each are that they will contribute immediately. We are thrilled that they are joining our Pioneer family," said Cremeans.

Denver opens the 2016-17 season Friday at home against Air Force. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
