Red Lake Receives $13M USDA Funding To Address Longtime Concerns

Exciting times are ahead for the Red Lake Nation.

After a long struggle dealing with dangerous work conditions and drug and alcohol addiction in the community, many long-term needs will be addressed in four critical projects, all of this possible through a $13-million direct loan by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Nearly $5-million will be used to build a new chemical dependency treatment center, and $3-million will expand its renal dialysis center from five to 12 units. Currently, patients will have to travel more than 60 miles to the next nearest facility.

After 46 years, Red Lake will construct a new fire hall that will serve 6,000 residents currently living on the reservation. Red Lake officials say the Bureau of Indian Affairs have condemned the current facility for 15 years now due to its poor condition.

Ponemah will also have a new fire hall, serving 700 residents.

Through all these projects, Red Lake Band's chairman is also pushing to create more jobs for his members.

City officials will make a decision next week on possibly tearing down the current fire hall. The band looks forward to breaking grounds on all four projects next spring.
